In which year was Agatha Christie born?

The story behind the answer

Agatha Christie was born in 1890. She was born on 15 September 1890 at Ashfield, her family home in Torquay, Devon, England.

Christie was the youngest of three children of Frederick Alvah Miller and Clarissa Margaret Miller. She grew up in a comfortable upper-middle-class household and was largely educated at home. Her childhood in Devon later became part of the background that informed her interest in English communities, manners, and social tensions.

Her birth year places her within the generation that shaped the Golden Age of Detective Fiction after the First World War. She began writing her first detective novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, in 1916, and it was published in 1920.

Christie lived until 1976, dying at the age of 85. Her long career spanned novels, short stories, plays, memoirs, and romantic fiction written under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott.
