Women’s ski jumping made its Olympic debut in 2014 at the Sochi Winter Games in Russia.
The debut came in the individual normal-hill event, ending decades in which Olympic ski jumping was restricted to men. Germany’s Carina Vogt won the first women’s Olympic ski-jumping gold medal, ahead of Austria’s Daniela Iraschko-Stolz and France’s Coline Mattel.
The road to inclusion was controversial. Women had competed in ski jumping internationally, but proposals for Olympic inclusion were rejected before the 2010 Vancouver Games. The International Olympic Committee approved the event for Sochi in 2011, and 30 women from 12 countries ultimately competed.
The event was a single individual competition rather than a full women’s programme matching the men’s events. Later Games expanded opportunities, including a mixed team event at Beijing 2022. This is why 2010 is a tempting but incorrect option: women’s ski jumping was discussed for Vancouver, but first contested at the Olympics in 2014.
