In which year did Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart die?

The story behind the answer

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died in 1791. He died in Vienna on 5 December 1791, aged 35, after becoming seriously ill during the final weeks of his life.

Mozart’s last year was remarkably productive. He completed the opera La clemenza di Tito, saw The Magic Flute premiered, finished his Clarinet Concerto, and worked on the Requiem, which remained unfinished at his death and was completed by Franz Xaver Süssmayr.

The precise cause of Mozart’s death remains uncertain. Historical accounts describe fever, swelling, pain, vomiting, and other symptoms, and later writers have proposed diagnoses ranging from rheumatic fever to infections and other illnesses. The famous story that Antonio Salieri poisoned him is not supported by reliable evidence.

Mozart’s funeral also attracts misconceptions. He was buried in a common grave, which reflected contemporary Viennese practice and did not mean he was abandoned or buried without ceremony. His death in 1791 placed him at the end of the Classical period, while his music continued to shape later Romantic composers.
