The redesigned WhatsApp Status launched on February 24, 2017, coinciding with WhatsApp's eighth anniversary. It let users share photos, videos, and GIFs with selected contacts, adding captions, drawings, and emoji. Each update was designed to disappear after 24 hours, making Status a temporary stream rather than a permanent profile post.
The feature drew obvious comparisons with Snapchat Stories and Instagram Stories, which also emphasize short-lived visual updates. However, WhatsApp connected Status directly to a user's address book and allowed viewers to reply privately in a chat. Privacy settings let users choose which contacts could see their updates.
The word “Status” can cause confusion because WhatsApp had long offered a simple text status describing what a person was doing. The 2017 launch transformed that older idea into a multimedia, ephemeral feature. Status updates are protected by WhatsApp's encryption system, while their 24-hour lifespan concerns visibility—not the security of the underlying messages.
