In which year did the first televised Times Square New Year's Eve celebration air?

The story behind the answer

The first televised Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration aired in 1941.

Television coverage helped transform the Times Square ball drop from a New York gathering into a nationally recognized American ritual. By bringing the countdown into homes, broadcasts allowed viewers far beyond Manhattan to share the same midnight moment and watch the ball descend at One Times Square.

The tradition was interrupted during World War II blackout restrictions. In 1942 and 1943, the ball was not lowered and the public celebration was suspended because New York City had to limit lighting that might aid enemy aircraft. The midnight observance continued in a quieter form, with crowds observing a moment of darkness and churches ringing bells.

Modern television specials now combine the Times Square countdown with performances and reports from other cities. These later productions should not be confused with the first televised event in 1941, which predates the large multi-network entertainment broadcasts familiar today.
