In which year did the Dow Jones Industrial Average finally regain its 1929 peak?

The story behind the answer

The Dow Jones Industrial Average finally regained its 1929 peak in 1954.

The Dow reached its pre-crash closing high of 381.17 on September 3, 1929. After the Wall Street Crash and the economic contraction of the Great Depression, the index fell to a low of 41.22 in July 1932.

The market recovered unevenly during the 1930s and 1940s, but World War II, recession, and later economic uncertainty slowed the return to the earlier level. The Dow closed above its 1929 peak on November 23, 1954.

This recovery date is measured in nominal index points, not after adjusting for inflation or dividends. It also does not mean the wider economy took exactly 25 years to recover: employment, output, prices, and household wealth followed different paths.
