The Booker Prize dropped “Man” from its name in 2019.
The award was originally called the Booker Prize when it began in 1969. In 2002, sponsorship from Man Group led to the name change to the Man Booker Prize. When Man Group ended its sponsorship after the 2018 award, the prize returned to its shorter original name.
The change took effect on 1 June 2019, when the Crankstart charitable foundation became the new sponsor. The 2019 award was therefore officially the Booker Prize, rather than the Man Booker Prize. That year’s ceremony also became famous for another reason: Margaret Atwood and Bernardine Evaristo were declared joint winners.
The name change applies to the main English-language fiction prize. The related translation award was also renamed: the Man Booker International Prize became the International Booker Prize in 2019. This can cause confusion because books from 2002 through 2018 are often still described using the “Man Booker” name, while later winners are Booker Prize winners.
