The Battle of Badr occurred in 624 CE during Ramadan.
Fought near Badr in the Hejaz, the battle is traditionally dated to 17 Ramadan in 2 AH, corresponding to 13 March 624 CE. It was the first major armed confrontation between Muhammad’s followers in Medina and the Quraysh of Mecca.
The Muslims, numbering about 313, defeated a much larger Quraysh force. The victory strengthened Muhammad’s position in Medina and became one of the most important events in early Islamic history. The Qur’an refers to Badr as Yawm al-Furqan, or the “Day of Criterion.”
Some historical sources give slightly different dates within Ramadan, but the year 624 CE is the standard answer. It should not be confused with the conquest of Mecca, which took place in Ramadan in 630 CE.
