In which year did Salvador Dalí join the Surrealist group in Paris?

The story behind the answer

Salvador Dalí joined the Surrealist group in Paris in 1929.

That year marked a decisive change in Dalí’s career. He traveled to Paris, met leading avant-garde artists, and became closely associated with André Breton and the Surrealist movement. Dalí’s highly detailed dream imagery and his interest in unconscious thought soon made him one of the movement’s best-known painters.

Dalí had already developed an individual style before joining the group. His Paris connections, however, gave his work a wider intellectual and artistic setting. In 1929 he also collaborated with Luis Buñuel on Un Chien Andalou, a film strongly associated with early Surrealist cinema.

Dalí’s relationship with the group later became strained, especially because of his political views and his commercially ambitious public persona. Breton eventually expelled him in 1934, but Dalí continued to be identified with Surrealism for the rest of his career.
