In which year did Roger Federer help Switzerland win the Davis Cup?

The story behind the answer

Roger Federer helped Switzerland win the Davis Cup in 2014. It was Switzerland’s first Davis Cup title, making the achievement one of the most important milestones in Federer’s international career.

Switzerland reached the final against France in Lille from 21 to 23 November 2014. Federer played the opening singles rubber, defeating Richard Gasquet, and then helped secure the title by beating France’s top player, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in the decisive singles match on the final day.

Stan Wawrinka was also central to Switzerland’s triumph. He won the opening match against Tsonga, and Federer and Wawrinka partnered in the doubles rubber. Switzerland ultimately defeated France 3–1 in the final.

The victory was especially meaningful because Federer had previously won Olympic doubles gold for Switzerland with Wawrinka in 2008, but had never captured the Davis Cup. The 2014 triumph completed that missing team achievement. It is sometimes confused with Federer’s later appearances for Switzerland, but the country’s breakthrough Davis Cup championship came specifically in 2014.
