Pelé won his third World Cup in 1970.

Brazil won the tournament in Mexico, defeating Italy 4–1 in the final at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. Pelé opened the scoring with a header, becoming the first player to score in two World Cup finals. Gérson, Jairzinho and Carlos Alberto Torres added Brazil’s other goals.

Pelé had previously won the 1958 World Cup in Sweden and the 1962 World Cup in Chile. Brazil did not win in 1966, when the team was eliminated in the group stage. The 1970 triumph therefore completed Pelé’s unique collection of three World Cup victories.

Brazil’s 1970 team, featuring Pelé alongside Jairzinho, Rivellino, Gérson, Tostão and Carlos Alberto, is often regarded as one of the greatest international sides ever assembled. The victory gave Brazil its third title and allowed the country to keep the Jules Rimet Trophy permanently under the rules then in effect.
