In which year did Johann Sebastian Bach die?

The story behind the answer

Johann Sebastian Bach died in 1750.

Bach died in Leipzig on 28 July 1750, aged 65, after suffering declining health and undergoing unsuccessful eye operations. He had spent the final decades of his career as Thomaskantor, directing music at Leipzig's principal churches and teaching at the St. Thomas School.

The year 1750 is also commonly used as the symbolic end of the Baroque period in music. Bach's death did not cause that transition by itself, but his intensely contrapuntal style represented the culmination of Baroque practice, while composers such as Haydn and Mozart later helped establish the Classical style.

A common mix-up is confusing Bach with his sons. His son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach lived until 1788, and his son Johann Christian Bach died in 1782. Bach's major works include the Brandenburg Concertos, the Mass in B minor, and The Well-Tempered Clavier.
