In which year did Gustave Courbet die? Gustave Courbet died in 1877.
Courbet died on 31 December 1877, aged 58, in La Tour-de-Peilz, Switzerland. He had been living in self-imposed exile there after the political upheavals surrounding the Paris Commune and the destruction of the Vendôme Column.
A leader of nineteenth-century French Realism, Courbet challenged academic conventions by painting contemporary people, rural laborers, and social realities rather than idealized historical subjects. His best-known works include “A Burial at Ornans,” “The Stone Breakers,” and “The Artist’s Studio.”
After the Commune, Courbet was held responsible for the column’s demolition and was ordered to help pay for its reconstruction. In 1877, the final assessment was set at 323,000 francs, payable in annual installments. He died on the day before the first installment was due.
The date is sometimes confused with 1873, the year Courbet left France for Switzerland, or 1871, when he was imprisoned for his involvement in the Commune. Those events preceded his death by several years.
