Dorna Sports took over the commercial rights of MotoGP in 1992.
The agreement made Dorna the commercial and broadcast-rights holder for the FIM World Motorcycle Championship’s premier competition. That role helped transform the championship’s presentation, television distribution, sponsorship structure and international promotion.
Dorna was founded in Spain in 1988 and entered motorcycle racing’s commercial side only a few years later. Its involvement eventually expanded beyond selling advertising and broadcasting rights: the company became central to the modern MotoGP business and helped develop the championship’s global media and event strategy.
The date is sometimes confused with later milestones, including Carmelo Ezpeleta becoming Dorna’s chief executive in 1998 and the creation of the MotoGP name for the four-stroke premier class in 2002. Those events changed the championship, but they did not mark Dorna’s initial takeover of its commercial rights.
