In which U.S. state was John Ford born?

The story behind the answer

John Ford was born in Maine, specifically in Cape Elizabeth, on February 1, 1894. He was born John Martin Feeney and later adopted the professional surname Ford, following the example of his older brother Francis Ford, who was already working in Hollywood.

Ford grew up in a large Irish-American family in Maine and attended Portland High School. His background shaped the strong sense of community, family loyalty, landscape, and immigrant identity that appears throughout many of his films. Although he became famous for Westerns, his work also covered Irish dramas, historical stories, literary adaptations, and wartime documentaries.

Maine is sometimes confused with California because Ford spent much of his professional life in Hollywood and died in Palm Desert, California. His birthplace, however, was Cape Elizabeth, Maine. A statue honoring him stands in Portland, linking the director’s Hollywood legacy with the state where his life began.
