In which U.S. state did Georgia O'Keeffe spend much of her later career?

Georgia O'Keeffe spent much of her later career in New Mexico. She first visited the state in 1929 and returned repeatedly before moving there permanently in 1949, three years after Alfred Stieglitz died.

New Mexico supplied many of the subjects most closely associated with her mature work: desert landscapes, adobe buildings, crosses, bones, flowers, and the surrounding mountains. She worked at locations including Ghost Ranch and Abiquiú.

Her attention to particular views was highly focused. For example, she repeatedly painted the view from the back seat of her car and the hills near her homes. These subjects became recognizable visual motifs rather than incidental scenery.

New Mexico is not the same as Arizona, Colorado, or Utah, which also contain desert and mountain landscapes. O'Keeffe’s homes, studios, and many signature subjects were specifically connected to northern New Mexico.
