Georgia O'Keeffe spent her later life and died in New Mexico.
O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned repeatedly before moving there permanently in the later part of her life. The state's stark landscapes, adobe buildings, bones, and plants became central subjects in her art.
She lived and worked in Abiquiú and at Ghost Ranch, while Santa Fe became the location of her final years. Her New Mexico paintings were not simply travel images; they reflected sustained observation and a long engagement with the region's forms and light.
O'Keeffe died in Santa Fe on March 6, 1986, at the age of 98. Her ashes were scattered over Cerro Pedernal, a mountain she painted repeatedly. New Mexico is therefore linked to both her artistic identity and her final resting place.
