In which US city was Gap Inc. founded? Gap Inc. was founded in San Francisco.
Donald Fisher and Doris F. Fisher opened the first Gap store on Ocean Avenue near City College in San Francisco’s Ingleside neighborhood. The opening took place on August 21, 1969, giving the retailer a distinctly Californian starting point before it expanded across the United States and internationally.
The store’s original concept was unusually focused: it sold Levi Strauss clothing in many sizes and styles, with LP records added to appeal to teenage customers. Donald Fisher had noticed that major department stores often ran out of popular Levi’s sizes and colors, so the new shop emphasized availability and straightforward browsing.
San Jose was the location of Gap’s second store, which opened in 1970, and is therefore sometimes mistaken for the founding city. The company later established its headquarters in nearby Burlingame in 1971, but Burlingame was not where Gap was founded. The founding city is San Francisco.
