In which town was the 1969 Woodstock music festival held?

The story behind the answer

The 1969 Woodstock music festival was held near Bethel, New York.

The event’s official name was the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, and it took place from 15 to 18 August 1969. Promoters originally planned it near the town of Woodstock, but the festival was moved to Max Yasgur’s dairy farm in Bethel after other sites became unavailable.

About 400,000 people attended the festival, which featured performers including Jimi Hendrix, Joan Baez, The Who, Santana and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Hendrix’s performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” became one of the event’s defining moments.

The name Woodstock stayed because the organizers and performers were associated with the Woodstock area. The venue is now preserved as the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, with a museum devoted to the festival and its era.
