Destiny's Child was formed in Houston, Texas, where Beyoncé began performing with the group that became her breakthrough act.
The group grew out of a Houston singing and dancing project called Girl's Tyme. Beyoncé and LaTavia Roberson were among its early members, and the lineup later evolved through several changes before Destiny's Child became internationally famous with Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams.
Houston remained central to Beyoncé's story even after her solo career began. She was born and raised there, and the city is frequently associated with the formative years of her performance training. Destiny's Child later signed with Columbia Records and achieved major success with songs including “Say My Name” and “Survivor.”
A common mix-up is confusing the group's formation city with Atlanta, where some early music-business activity occurred. The group's roots, however, are specifically tied to Houston.
