In which state is the Overlook Hotel located in 'The Shining'?

The story behind the answer

In The Shining, the Overlook Hotel is located in Colorado. More specifically, Stephen King places the isolated resort in the Colorado Rockies, where it closes for the winter and becomes cut off by heavy snow.

The location reflects King's desire to move away from the Maine settings of Carrie and 'Salem's Lot. In 1974, King and his wife, Tabitha, stayed at Colorado's Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, and that visit helped inspire the Overlook's atmosphere, though King stated that the fictional hotel was not based directly on any real hotel.

The novel was published in 1977 and follows Jack Torrance, who takes a winter caretaker's job at the Overlook. His son Danny has psychic abilities known as “the shining,” allowing him to perceive the hotel's supernatural history. The 1980 film adaptation is also associated with Colorado, although much of it was filmed elsewhere.
