In which state is the historic Mark Twain House located?

The historic Mark Twain House is located in Connecticut, in the city of Hartford.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens and his family lived in the house from 1874 to 1891. Designed by architect Edward Tuckerman Potter, it was built in a Victorian Gothic style on Farmington Avenue in Hartford’s Nook Farm neighborhood. Twain’s wife, Olivia, helped shape the project, and the home reflected the family’s prosperity during his most productive period.

Twain wrote several major works there, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Life on the Mississippi, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. The house included a top-floor billiards room and private study where Twain often wrote late at night.

Financial difficulties, including losses from investments in a failed typesetting machine, led the family to leave Hartford in 1891. The building later served as a school, apartment building, and library branch. It was rescued from possible demolition, became a National Historic Landmark in 1962, and opened as a house museum in 1974.

The house is sometimes confused with Twain’s birthplace and boyhood home in Hannibal, Missouri, but those are separate historic sites.
