In which state is Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin estate located?

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin estate is located in Wisconsin. It stands near Spring Green in the state’s Driftless Area, a hilly landscape shaped by river valleys and unusual limestone formations.

Wright began developing Taliesin in 1911 on land associated with his maternal family, the Lloyd Joneses. He designed the home and studio with Mamah Borthwick, placing the complex into the brow of a hill. The Welsh name Taliesin means “shining brow,” an apt reference to both the site and its architecture.

Taliesin was rebuilt and altered several times after major fires, including a 1914 fire and another in 1925. The estate covers about 600 acres and is often called Taliesin East to distinguish it from Taliesin West in Arizona, Wright’s later winter home.

The Wisconsin estate became a National Historic Landmark in 1976 and part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing The 20th-Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright in 2019. A common mix-up is choosing Arizona because Taliesin West is there; the original Taliesin is in Wisconsin.
