In which Spanish city is the Sagrada Família located?
Answer
Barcelona
Answer
Barcelona
The Sagrada Família is located in Barcelona, Spain. It stands in Barcelona’s Eixample district and is one of the city’s defining landmarks, even though construction continued long after its architect’s death.
Construction began in 1882 under Francisco de Paula del Villar. Antoni Gaudí took over the project in 1883 and radically reworked the design, replacing a conventional Gothic Revival plan with an intensely personal combination of Gothic structure, Catalan Modernisme, natural forms, and symbolic religious decoration.
Seville, Valencia, and Madrid are also major Spanish cities with important historic architecture, which can make the options tempting. They are not the home of the Sagrada Família. The basilica is closely tied to Barcelona’s urban landscape, and its towers, façades, and interior columns have become visual symbols of the city. It was consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 and designated a minor basilica.
