In which season of Seinfeld did the episode The Contest air?

The story behind the answer

“The Contest” aired in Seinfeld’s fourth season.

It is the eleventh episode of season 4 and originally aired on NBC on November 18, 1992. In the story, Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer compete to see who can go the longest without masturbating. The episode avoids saying the subject directly, using euphemisms such as “master of my domain” instead.

Larry David wrote the episode, and Tom Cherones directed it. NBC executives initially considered its subject unsuitable for prime-time television, but the script’s indirect language allowed the episode to proceed. Its premise became a landmark example of Seinfeld turning an everyday taboo into a tightly structured comedy.

“The Contest” was also a major awards success. David won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series, and TV Guide later ranked it first on its 2009 list of the 100 greatest television episodes.
