The Twilight Zone changed its opening narration from “There is a fifth dimension” in the second season. The new wording began, “You’re traveling through another dimension,” and introduced the familiar idea of a dimension of sight, sound, and mind.
Season 2 premiered on September 30, 1960, with “King Nine Will Not Return.” The change accompanied a broader redesign of the program’s opening: Bernard Herrmann’s first-season theme was replaced by Marius Constant’s more unsettling guitar-and-bongo theme, and the earlier closing-eye imagery gave way to a more abstract sequence.
The transition was not perfectly uniform. The first three episodes of season 2 used a shorter version of the new narration, ending with “Next stop—The Twilight Zone.” Later episodes added the phrase “That’s the signpost up ahead” and the wording “Your next stop—the Twilight Zone.”
Some first-season episodes were later rebroadcast with the second-season opening attached, which can create confusion when viewers compare recordings. The change therefore belongs to season 2, even though the narration was also reused on certain summer reruns of earlier episodes.
