In which sea would you find the Cayman Islands?

The story behind the answer

In which sea would you find the Cayman Islands? The Caribbean Sea. The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory in the western Caribbean, positioned south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica.

The territory consists of three islands: Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. They are the exposed peaks of the Cayman Ridge, an underwater mountain range. Just south of the islands lies the Cayman Trough, one of the deepest parts of the Caribbean Sea, reaching roughly 7,686 metres.

The Caribbean Sea is part of the Atlantic Ocean and is bordered by the Greater Antilles, Central America and the northern coast of South America. The Cayman Islands are sometimes associated with the Greater Antilles geographically, but they are not in the Gulf of Mexico, a frequent mix-up caused by their proximity to Cuba and the Yucatán Peninsula.

Grand Cayman is the largest and most populous island, and George Town is the territory’s capital. The islands are known for coral reefs, marine life and financial services, while their tropical climate also makes them vulnerable to Atlantic hurricanes, including the devastating Hurricane Ivan in 2004.
