In which round was Michael Jordan drafted in the 1984 NBA draft?

The story behind the answer

Michael Jordan was drafted in the first round of the 1984 NBA draft.

The Chicago Bulls selected Jordan with the third overall pick on June 19, 1984. He entered the draft as a junior from the University of North Carolina, where he had already won the 1982 NCAA championship and become one of college basketball’s leading stars.

Jordan was the third player chosen, following center Hakeem Olajuwon, selected first overall by Houston, and center Sam Bowie, selected second by Portland. His selection became one of the defining moments in draft history because Jordan went on to win six NBA championships, five regular-season MVP awards and six Finals MVP awards.

The 1984 draft is often remembered as one of the strongest ever. It also included Charles Barkley, chosen fifth, and John Stockton, chosen 16th. A common mistake is to focus on Jordan’s third overall position and misstate the round; third overall still means the first round.
