In which room of the Palace of Versailles was the Treaty of Versailles signed in 1919?

The story behind the answer

The Treaty of Versailles was signed in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles on 28 June 1919. The treaty formally ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied powers after World War I.

The Hall of Mirrors, or Galerie des Glaces, was built during the reign of Louis XIV. It is famous for its seventeen mirrored panels, which face seventeen windows overlooking the palace gardens. The room was designed to display royal power and the wealth of the French monarchy.

The 1919 signing deliberately took place in the same room where the German Empire had been proclaimed in 1871 after France’s defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. That setting gave the ceremony strong symbolic meaning for France and the victorious Allies.

The treaty imposed territorial, military, and financial conditions on Germany and created the League of Nations framework. The armistice had stopped the fighting on 11 November 1918; the treaty was the later peace settlement.
