In which relay did Michael Phelps win his 8th gold at the 2008 Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Michael Phelps won his eighth gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in the 4×100-metre medley relay.

The Beijing final took place on August 17, 2008, at the National Aquatics Center. Phelps swam the third leg—the butterfly segment—for the United States, following Aaron Peirsol’s backstroke and Brendan Hansen’s breaststroke. Jason Lezak completed the freestyle anchor leg.

The American team won in 3:29.34, setting a world record and finishing 0.70 seconds ahead of Australia. Phelps’s 50.15-second butterfly split helped the United States build its lead before Lezak brought the race home. The victory gave Phelps eight gold medals at one Olympic Games, surpassing Mark Spitz’s record of seven, set in 1972.

A common mix-up is the 4×200-metre freestyle relay, which was also one of Phelps’s Beijing victories. His eighth and final gold, however, came in the medley relay, where each swimmer uses a different stroke.
