In which region do Pokémon Red and Green take place?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Red and Green take place in the Kanto region.

Kanto is the setting for the first-generation Pokémon games and is home to locations such as Pallet Town, Viridian City, Pewter City, and the Indigo Plateau. Players travel through the region while collecting Gym Badges and building a team from the original 151 Pokémon.

The name Kanto was not used in the original Japanese Red and Green games as prominently as it was in later titles. It became especially clear after Pokémon Gold and Silver introduced Johto, a neighboring region that could be connected to the first games’ world.

Kanto is also the principal setting of the first anime season, although the game and anime versions do not match in every detail. The region is based partly on Japan’s real Kantō region, which includes Tokyo and surrounding prefectures.
