The original Pokémon Red and Blue games are set in the Kanto region.
Kanto is the fictional setting introduced by the first Pokémon games. The player begins in Pallet Town and travels through cities, routes, caves, forests, and waterways while collecting Gym Badges and building a team of Pokémon.
The region contains eight Pokémon Gyms, followed by the Elite Four and the Pokémon League Champion. Professor Oak gives the player a Pokédex and one of three starter Pokémon: Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. The player's rival chooses another starter and repeatedly challenges them during the journey.
Pokémon Kanto is inspired partly by Japan's real Kantō region, but it is not the same place. The game map adapts recognizable geographic ideas into a compact fantasy landscape. Later games revisited Kanto, including Pokémon Gold and Silver, which allowed players to return there after completing the Johto storyline.
