In which present-day country is Mount Kilimanjaro located?

The story behind the answer

Mount Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania.

Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain, rising to 5,895 metres above sea level at Uhuru Peak on Kibo, its highest volcanic cone. The mountain stands in northeastern Tanzania, close to the Kenyan border, but its summit lies entirely within Tanzania.

Kilimanjaro is a dormant stratovolcano composed of three cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is the central and highest cone. Although the mountain is near the equator, its summit has glaciers and permanent ice, though those ice fields have declined substantially since the late nineteenth century.

The mountain’s name is commonly associated with the Swahili and possibly local-language traditions, but its precise etymology remains debated. Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller made the first recorded ascent to Kibo’s summit in 1889, accompanied by the Tanzanian guide Yohanas Kinyala Lauwo.
