In which Poe story does a man wall up his wife inside a cellar wall?

The story behind the answer

The Poe story in which a man walls his wife inside a cellar wall is “The Black Cat.” The unnamed narrator kills his wife after she intervenes when he tries to attack a second black cat, then conceals the body behind bricks in the basement.

The story begins with the narrator’s affection for animals, especially his black cat Pluto. His personality changes as he becomes increasingly violent and alcoholic. After he hangs Pluto, a second cat appears, bearing a white marking that he gradually interprets as the shape of a gallows.

When police investigate his wife’s disappearance, the narrator boasts about the strength of the cellar walls and strikes the very section hiding the corpse. A cry comes from inside. The police tear down the wall and discover both the body and the cat, which the narrator accidentally sealed inside with it.

Readers often confuse this crime with “The Cask of Amontillado,” where Montresor walls Fortunato into a niche. “The Tell-Tale Heart” also concerns a concealed murder, but its victim is an old man rather than a wife.
