In which of these major American cities did Georgia O'Keeffe once live and paint?
Answer
New York City
Answer
New York City
Georgia O’Keeffe once lived and painted in New York City. She moved there from Texas in June 1918 at the invitation of photographer and gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz, who became her partner and later her husband.
New York became an important subject during O’Keeffe’s years in the city. From the Shelton Hotel, where she lived in the 1920s, she painted skyscrapers, streets, bridges, and nighttime views, helping establish the modern American cityscape as a serious subject in American art. Works such as “Radiator Building—Night, New York” and “East River from the Thirtieth Story of the Shelton Hotel” show her distinctive approach to architecture and light.
A common mix-up is assuming O’Keeffe was primarily a New York painter. She is equally associated with New Mexico, where she began spending extended periods in 1929 and later made her permanent home. She also spent summers at Lake George, in upstate New York, with Stieglitz’s family. Even so, New York City was where she lived, worked, and developed much of her early mature style.
