Times Square, the site of New York City's famous New Year's Eve ball drop, is in Manhattan.
The square is formed by the junction of Broadway, Seventh Avenue, and 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan. It became known for its illuminated billboards and dense theatrical district, and its public celebrations made it one of the most recognizable urban locations in the world.
The first New Year's Eve ball drop at the site took place in 1907. The ceremony was created as a replacement for fireworks used by The New York Times to celebrate its new headquarters. The newspaper's move also helped give the area the name Times Square, replacing the earlier Longacre Square.
New York City has five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island. Times Square is not in Brooklyn or Queens, despite those boroughs also hosting large public celebrations. The ball drop happens at One Times Square, a building at the southern end of the square.
