In which literary magazine was Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment first published?
Answer
The Russian Messenger
Answer
The Russian Messenger
Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment was first published in The Russian Messenger.
The novel appeared in that Russian literary journal during 1866, initially in twelve monthly installments. Its publication brought readers the story of Rodion Raskolnikov, a former student in Saint Petersburg who tests a theory that extraordinary people may stand above ordinary morality.
The Russian Messenger, known in Russian as Russky Vestnik, was one of the major journals of nineteenth-century Russian literature. Mikhail Katkov edited it and published important works by several leading writers.
The novel’s serialization matters because Dostoevsky wrote under severe financial pressure and deadlines. The completed book was published in 1867, after the journal installments. The work is therefore often dated to 1866 in connection with its first serial publication.
