In which language is the term “quinceañera” formed?

The story behind the answer

The term quinceañera is formed in Spanish.

Its central element, quince, is the Spanish word for fifteen. The full term is used for the young woman celebrating her fifteenth birthday and, in English-language usage, often for the celebration itself.

The tradition is strongly associated with Spanish-speaking Latin America and Hispanic communities elsewhere. That association explains why Spanish vocabulary remains prominent even when the event takes place in an English-speaking country.

Portuguese-speaking Brazil has related coming-of-age traditions but uses different terminology. A word’s language does not by itself determine the exact customs of an event: music, clothing, religious practice, and ceremony can all vary by country, region, and family.
