In which Japanese prefecture is Sakurajima located?
Answer
Kagoshima
Answer
Kagoshima
Sakurajima is located in Kagoshima Prefecture in Kyushu, Japan.
The active stratovolcano sits in Kagoshima Bay and is now connected to the Ōsumi Peninsula. It was once an island, but lava from the enormous 1914 Taishō eruption joined it to the mainland. The volcano remains one of Japan’s most closely monitored active volcanic centres.
Sakurajima is frequently confused with Kagoshima City, which lies across the bay, or with other Japanese volcanic regions such as Nagasaki and Hokkaido. Kagoshima is the prefecture—the larger administrative area—that contains the volcano. Its frequent ash emissions are a defining feature of life around the bay.
