In which Japanese city is Nintendo’s headquarters located?

The story behind the answer

Nintendo’s headquarters is located in Kyoto, Japan.

Nintendo began in Kyoto in 1889, when Fusajiro Yamauchi started producing handmade hanafuda playing cards. The company later expanded into toys and electronic entertainment while retaining its base in the historic city.

Nintendo’s modern headquarters is in Minami-ku, Kyoto. The company also operates other facilities in Japan and offices around the world, but Kyoto remains its corporate home and an important part of its identity.

People sometimes answer Tokyo because Tokyo is Japan’s capital and the country’s largest corporate center. Nintendo, however, is one of the major Japanese companies headquartered outside Tokyo. Kyoto’s connection with the company reaches back to its founding as a card manufacturer.
