In which Japanese city did Matsuo Bashō die in 1694?

The story behind the answer

Matsuo Bashō died in Osaka in 1694.

Near the end of his life, Bashō left Edo for the last time in the summer of 1694. He traveled through Ueno and Kyoto before reaching Osaka, where he became seriously ill with a stomach ailment. His disciples gathered around him, and he died there on November 28, 1694.

Bashō’s final period came after decades of travel, teaching, and participation in haikai gatherings. Although later readers often treat him chiefly as a haiku poet, he devoted much of his working life to collaborative linked verse, especially renku. His travel writing also helped establish the image of the wandering poet in Japanese literature.

A farewell poem is traditionally associated with his death, though accounts differ over whether it was intended as a formal death poem. Bashō was buried at Gichū-ji in Ōtsu, near Lake Biwa, rather than in Osaka, the city where he died.
