Monet traveled to Bordighera in January 1884 after the artist Jean-François Auburtin recommended the region. He was attracted by the Mediterranean light, exotic vegetation, and landscapes that differed sharply from the Normandy and Parisian subjects of his earlier work.
During the visit, Monet produced numerous paintings of Bordighera and the nearby Italian landscape. The trip was artistically productive, although the intense conditions and unfamiliar scenery presented new challenges in color and composition.
Bordighera is sometimes confused with other Mediterranean destinations Monet visited or painted, including the French Riviera and Venice. The Italian town is the specific location associated with his major 1884 Riviera campaign.
