In which Italian city is the Uffizi Gallery located?

The story behind the answer

The Uffizi Gallery is located in Florence, Italy.

The museum stands beside Piazza della Signoria in Florence’s historic center, in the Tuscan region. Its name comes from the Italian word uffizi, meaning “offices,” because the building was originally planned as a complex for administrative offices and guild functions rather than as a public art museum.

Cosimo I de’ Medici commissioned Giorgio Vasari to begin construction in 1560. The building was completed in 1581, and the Medici family gradually filled its upper rooms with paintings, sculptures, and other works. This collection formed the foundation of one of the world’s most important museums of Renaissance art.

The Uffizi is especially associated with Florentine masters and houses works by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, and Caravaggio. It is sometimes confused with Florence’s Accademia Gallery, which is best known for Michelangelo’s David, or with the Palazzo Pitti across the Arno.
