Michelangelo’s original David is displayed in Florence at the Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze, usually called the Accademia Gallery. The museum has housed the statue since 1873, when it was moved indoors for protection after nearly four centuries in an outdoor civic setting.
David was unveiled in Florence’s Piazza della Signoria in 1504. It had originally been commissioned for a high position near Florence Cathedral, but officials decided that the sculpture’s scale and political symbolism made it more powerful as a public emblem. A marble replica was installed in the square in 1910, so visitors there are seeing a copy rather than the original.
The Accademia Gallery is not the Uffizi, another major Florence museum often associated with Renaissance art. Its collection includes other Michelangelo works, including the unfinished Prisoners. Florence’s David is also distinct from copies displayed elsewhere, including replicas in Rome and at Florence’s Piazzale Michelangelo. The city is therefore both the sculpture’s historic birthplace and the permanent home of the original.
