Banksy painted The Son of a Migrant from Syria in Calais, France, in 2015.
The mural depicts Steve Jobs, Apple’s co-founder, carrying an old computer and a black bag. Banksy presented Jobs as the son of a Syrian migrant, referring to the fact that his biological father, Abdulfattah Jandali, was from Syria.
The work appeared near the migrant camp commonly known as the Calais Jungle. It formed part of Banksy’s response to the European migrant crisis and connected a global technology figure with the experience of displacement.
The mural was later removed from its original location and displayed elsewhere. Calais is sometimes confused with Dunkirk because both are northern French port cities associated with migrant routes, but the Banksy mural was painted in Calais.
