In which fictional region do the original Pokémon Red and Green adventures take place?

The story behind the answer

The original Pokémon Red and Green adventures take place in the fictional region of Kanto.

Kanto is the setting for the first-generation games and contains locations such as Pallet Town, Viridian City, and Lavender Town. The player travels through the region, challenges eight Gym Leaders, and ultimately faces the Pokémon League’s Elite Four and Champion.

The game region is inspired by Japan’s real Kantō region, but it is not the same place. The fictional Kanto uses its own towns, routes, landmarks, and Pokémon ecology. This distinction matters because the shared name can make the game setting sound like a direct map of the real-world area.

Kanto also returned in Pokémon Gold and Silver, where it could be explored after the player completed the Johto portion of the story. That sequel connection helped establish the idea that Pokémon regions could be linked across games and generations.
