The original Pokémon games take place in the fictional region of Kanto. The region is the setting for Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow and contains the first generation's towns, routes, caves, and Pokémon Gyms.
Kanto is based partly on the real Kantō region of Japan, although the game presents it as a stylized world designed for exploration. Important locations include Pallet Town, Viridian City, Saffron City, and the Pokémon League. Professor Oak's laboratory is also located in Pallet Town.
The name Kanto was not used prominently in the first Japanese releases, but it became the established regional name in later Pokémon material. Johto is the neighboring region introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver, while Hoenn and Sinnoh belong to later generations.
