In which episode does Lane Pryce commit suicide?

The story behind the answer

Lane Pryce commits suicide in the Mad Men episode “Commissions and Fees.” It is the twelfth and penultimate episode of season five, and the 64th episode of the series overall.

The episode begins with Lane under intense financial and professional pressure. He has forged Don Draper’s signature to cover a personal tax problem, but the deception is discovered. Don confronts him and allows him to resign rather than expose the crime to the other partners, leaving Lane humiliated and convinced that he has lost his place in both his family and his new American life.

Lane first attempts suicide using the exhaust of a new Jaguar, but the car will not start. He later returns to the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce office, writes a resignation letter, and hangs himself. Don discovers him the next morning, creating one of the series’ most disturbing turning points.

The title can be confused with “The Phantom,” the following episode, which deals with the aftermath of Lane’s death. “The Other Woman” immediately precedes “Commissions and Fees.”
