In which English county is Mr. Darcy's estate Pemberley located?

The story behind the answer

In which English county is Mr. Darcy’s estate Pemberley located? Pemberley is located in Derbyshire.

Pemberley is Fitzwilliam Darcy’s fictional country estate in Jane Austen’s 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice. Elizabeth Bennet visits it while touring the county with her aunt and uncle, the Gardiners, believing Darcy will be away. His unexpected arrival gives her a new view of his courtesy and character.

The estate lies near the fictional town of Lambton. Austen’s description presents Pemberley as a grand stone house surrounded by natural beauty, wooded hills, and a substantial stream. Elizabeth’s admiration of the landscape symbolically parallels her changing feelings toward Darcy.

Readers sometimes confuse Pemberley’s fictional location with the real buildings used in screen adaptations. Lyme Park in Cheshire, for example, portrayed Pemberley in the famous 1995 television adaptation, but the novel explicitly places Darcy’s estate in Derbyshire. Derbyshire also connects the novel to the Peak District landscape Elizabeth visits.
