In which English city did Niels Bohr work with Ernest Rutherford?
Answer
Manchester
Answer
Manchester
Niels Bohr worked with Ernest Rutherford in Manchester, England, in 1912.
After completing his doctorate in Copenhagen, Bohr travelled to England to continue his studies. He first spent time at J. J. Thomson’s Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, then met Rutherford and moved to the Victoria University of Manchester. Rutherford invited him to join his laboratory, where Bohr worked from the spring until July 1912.
Manchester was scientifically decisive for Bohr. Rutherford’s experiments had established that atoms contain a tiny, dense nucleus, but the nuclear model could not explain why orbiting electrons did not continuously radiate energy and spiral inward. Bohr combined Rutherford’s nuclear picture with quantum ideas influenced by Max Planck.
Bohr returned to Copenhagen and developed his celebrated atomic model, publishing its major results in 1913. The model explained the hydrogen spectrum and introduced quantized electron energy levels. Cambridge is a common wrong answer because Bohr studied there first, while London is associated with later visits and wartime work.
